About the Position: Vanderbilt University's Political ScienceDepartment has an exciting opportunity for a Statistician II to join the LatinAmerican Public Opinion Project (LAPOP). As a Statistician II you will independentlyand in collaboration with teams, apply technical skills in survey design,fieldwork oversight, and data analysis to develop, complete, and disseminateresearch on public opinion.
About the Department: LAPOP is the premier academic institutioncarrying out surveys of public opinion in the Americas, with over thirty yearsof experience. As a center for excellence in survey research, LAPOP uses"gold standard" approaches and innovative methods to carry outtargeted national surveys; conduct impact evaluation studies; and producereports on individual attitudes, evaluations, and experiences. TheAmericasBarometer survey is the only scientifically rigorous comparative surveythat covers 34 nations including all of North, Central, and South America, aswell as a significant number of countries in the Caribbean. Key Functions andExpected Performances
Collaborate as a member of a research group on the design ofresearch projects.
Assist in planning a complex schedule of research activitiescovering up to 35 countries and involving multiple sites and teams
Apply expertise in questionnaire design for surveys and, on occasion,focus groups.
Provide input into the development of complex, stratified sampledesigns.
Develop plans for fieldwork, project schedules, quality control,management of data, and dataset processing.
Train interview teams in best practices in survey implementationand in the use of hardware and software required for fieldwork (requiresoccasional travel abroad).
Assist in the process of identifying third parties (e.g., surveyfirms) for data collection and in the development of contracts.
Program questionnaires and samples into specialized software forsurvey data collection, and supervise research assistants as they audit theprograms.
Collaborate as a member of a research team on the implementationof research projects.
Oversee research projects to ensure that they stay on schedule,assist in identifying solutions to problems when they emerge to ensure projectsstay on schedule and that quality is maintained, and supervise researchassistants.
Use specialized software to oversee fieldwork and data auditingprocesses.
Assist in the development and dissemination of research output.
Apply knowledge of statistics and specialized software to analyzeand interpret survey data and draft and review project reports written forvarious audiences (sponsoring agencies, the media, academics, the public).
Help coordinate dissemination of research via presentations byteam members at various events; occasionally participate in the delivery oforal presentations on project findings. Travel domestically and/or abroad asneeded for such events.
Communicate in a timely, efficient, and professional manner withteams of country experts, research affiliates, contracted firms, sponsoringagencies, and other project collaborators across numerous countries.
On occasion develop and conduct workshops or training sessions inorder to increase capacity for survey research among students, project partners,the media, or others.
M.A. in political science, economics, or a related field of study,or the equivalent in experience
Specialized training or on the job experience in social science,survey, or other related field of research
Proven ability to work independently and in teams on researchprojects
Skills in programming and statistical analysis
Excellent communication skills – both written and verbal
Ability to problem-solve and manage multiple complex taskssimultaneously and effectively
Bilingual in English and Spanish
