The Latin American Studies Program (LASP) in San Jose, Costa Rica invites applications for a Program Assistant to support the academic and student life components of its program. LASP has a thirty-year history of excellence in experiential education and extensive support networks throughout Latin America. It is one of ten off-campus programs operated by the Council for Christian Colleges & Universities and is supported by a Washington, D.C.-based administrative team. This position would cover both the spring and fall 2019 semesters (January 2 - June 15 and August 15 - December 20, 2019), with the summer off (June 15 - August 15).

Assist with student life activities—seminars, reflections sessions, translation, service opportunities, and field trips, etc—including occasional after office-hour responsibilities
Mentor students personally, academically, and spiritually. Counsel students in the area of personal adjustment, interpersonal dynamics, and culture shock; intervene in crisis situations; assist in discipline matters.
Plan and oversee informal programs for students’ recreation and social/spiritual development, with a focus on offering students opportunities to interact with Costa Rican people and culture.
Communicate student problems and concerns to the Program Director.
Assist the Executive Administrator with office organization, set-up and take-down for activities, office opening and closing, and office and student mail distribution.
Assist with preparation, evaluation and scheduling of classroom activities, speakers etc. Manage logistics of students’ required activities and excursions, including participation in excursions when required.
Manage, update, and improve various LASP social media (Facebook, Instagram, blog etc.).
Assist the Director in updating and developing program policies, including LASP’s risk management plan and program evaluations.
Monitor student health and safety concerns, including the management of the student health folder, emergency kit and accompanying students to medical visits.
Assist the director in the design and management of a student internship program.
Assist the director in the admissions and enrollment process.
Other duties as assigned by supervisor.
Persons applying for the position should:
Have a strong appreciation for the Christian mission and purpose of the CCCU and its BestSemester programs
Have exceptional verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills
Hold a bachelors degree, preferably from a CCCU campus
Be working towards fluency in Spanish
Have prior study abroad experience; preference given to LASP Alum
Demonstrates the following personal qualities: initiative, patience, a cheerful spirit, and spiritual maturity. The PA will need to stay on top of details (schedules, tickets, head counts, etc.), but should also be relational and willing to encourage students who are dealing with all kinds of academic, personal, health, and/or cross-cultural issues. The PA should exemplify cross-cultural interaction and engagement; in this sense, the PA should be a model for the students on how to make the most of their experience in the program.
