POSITION SUMMARY This position counsels, advises, investigates, and resolves student cases in the areas of financial aid, billing and payment, registration, records, student employment, and veteran services The position provides direct One Stop support for Native American students attending the University of Minnesota Morris.
The position provides direct support for Native American students as a part of the Native American Student Success (NASS) program and works collaboratively with other campus offices and programs in building of a culture of success. The position will work to build strong working relationships with American Indian tribal educational staff. The position will support and foster financial literacy and wellness for native students.
The position requires a sensitivity, knowledge and understanding to work effectively with people from diverse academic, socioeconomic, gender, cultural and ethnic backgrounds. This is a 100% position reporting to the Assistant Director of One Stop Student Services with responsibilities to the NASS Director.
The position is funded 50% through One Stop Student Services. The additional 50% of the position is funded through University of Minnesota Morris’s US Department of Education Native American-Serving Nontribal Institutions Program (NASNTI) grant. The project is funded through September 30, 2020. Morris intends to apply for future U.S. Department of Education NASNTI funds.
Counsel, advise, investigate, and resolve student cases in the areas of financial aid, billing, payment, student employment, registration, student records, and veteran services. Provide in-depth counseling to students and parents/guests.
Provide direct One Stop support for all Native American students.
Explain federal, state and university policy and procedures and exercise authority to implement changes.
Participate in One Stop program development and serve as the lead on assigned projects.
Conduct one-on-one financial literacy and wellness meetings for students and parents/guests. Develop partnerships with campus departments to promote One Stop financial wellness initiatives/programs and provide presentations and workshops.
Serve on committees and participate in related meetings, as required by the One Stop Assistant Director.
Attend One Stop related training, conferences, and professional development programs.
Assist with related programs and other duties as assigned.
Collaborate with NASS project director to meet the Native American Student Success program objectives and timelines.
Provide one on one holistic One Stop, financial literacy, financial wellness, and economic health support for all NASS students.
Develop and introduce a series of new financial literacy /economic health modules – targeting 2nd, 3rd, and 4th year NASS students.
Assist with tracking NASS program participation and outcomes.
Serve on committees and participate in related meetings, as required by the NASS director.
Attend NASS related training, conferences, and professional development programs.
Assist with NASS related programs and other duties as assigned.
The University of Minnesota Morris, One Stop Student Services, seeks a One Stop Counselor/Native American Student Success Financial Wellness Specialist. This is a 12 month, 100%/40 hour week, Monday - Friday, 8:00 am - 4:30 pm, and includes some night and weekend responsibilities with occasional travel. This position will report to the Assistant Director of One Stop Student Services. The qualifications are as follows:
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS BA/BS degree with at least two years of experience in a customer/student service related field, OR a combination of related education and work experience to equal six years. Familiarity/experience in working with Native American students and families, tribes, communities and/or organizations. Availability to attend outreach events, which will include some evening, weekend hours, and travel. To create and maintain a safe learning and working environment a successful background check is required.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS Bachelor's degree and one or more years of direct experience in working with Native American students, families, tribes, communities and/or organizations. Related skills and experience in student financial aid, financial planning, and/or financial literacy.
