The Department of African American Studies is an intellectual community committed to producing, refining and advancing knowledge of Black people in the United States, the Caribbean, Latin America, Europe and Africa. A key component of the mission is to interrogate the meanings and dimensions of slavery and colonialism, and their continuing political, social and cultural implications.
The Department of Gender & Women's Studies is known for its investment in the well-being of students, and its smaller size means that it is somewhat easier to cultivate a community among undergraduate and graduate students, faculty and staff. By analyzing the powerful and problematic impact of gender — contextualized and refracted through varied lines of difference and inequality — this field has revised and enlivened the way we see ourselves and our world.
All three departments have a total of 267 undergraduate majors. African American Studies and the Ethnic Studies departments have 95 graduate students, and the Gender and Women’s Studies has a Designated Emphasis Program. The departments’ have 33.5 faculty, 30 lecturers, 20 visiting scholars and postdocs and student employees.
The Academic Analyst role involves recommending, developing, implementing, administering, coordinating, and/or evaluating Academic Human Resources policies, labor contracts, statutes, programs, and procedures covering one or more of the following: academic recruitment, appointment, and advancement; compensation and salary administration; faculty welfare programs; visa procurement; benefits; payroll; training and development; faculty misconduct; and faculty equity.
•Facilitates/manages the academic review processes, identifying issues relating to policy and compensation. •Oversees entire appointment and review process and maintenance of all senate appointments, and lecturer appointments. •Manage Senate academic personnel case preparation in compliance with University policy. Works with APBears for Academic Caseload. Manages the cluster departmental voting process for promotion. Independently reviews, analyzes and makes recommendations related to Senate faculty related to sabbatical supplementation, research recall, and teaching recall appointments. •Independently researches all relevant data records and information pertaining to each academic personnel review and maintains staffing list in order to notify candidates of reviews. •Administers merit/promotion cases using HCM Case Tracker. Enters appointments in the HCM system and maintains personnel actions as required in HCM. •Coordinates with Berkeley Regional Services (BRS) payroll transactions for faculty, lecturers, GSIs and work-study. Prepares hiring request for faculty and lecturer summer appointments. •Provide individual timeline to each candidate for review of cases that detail specific deadlines and provides procedures to candidates for their cases. •Ensure procedures and deadlines and requirements are conveyed to relevant faculty regarding personnel actions. •The incumbent assists in staff coverage for Gender and Women’s Studies and African American Studies when other staff members are out, directing students and visitors from the Cluster Departments who come to the front office. •Provides assistance to the GWS Chair. •Analyzes and interprets guidelines and policies to provide advice and counsel to unit clients. •Provides strategic advice and counsel to unit heads by analyzing and interpreting system-wide can campus policies, collective bargaining agreements, academic personnel procedures and practices. •Provides administrative, executive, and analytical support to the Chairs. Composes correspondence for the Chair’s signature, maintains schedule of pending matters and schedules appointments. •Ensures Chair’s directives are disseminated to faculty on a timely basis. •Analyzes data and advises Chairs’ on the best alternatives and strategies on a variety of topics. Responsible for interpreting, communicating and implementing academic personnel policies and procedures. •Ensures academic cases are handled smoothly. •Coordinates the academic search process, including placement of ads, drafting of search plans, and conducting the initial screening of materials submitted. •Works with the departmental search committees to schedule interviews and seminar presentations for perspective faculty candidates. Posts tenure-track positions in journals and on websites. •Works with the new AP recruit system. Sets up visits, travel and hotel arrangements for visitors for job talks. •Identifies and customizes training needs for diverse constituencies. Researches and provides strategic advice and counsel to the Chairs by analyzing and interpreting system-wide and campus policies, collective bargaining unit agreements, academic personnel procedures and practices. •Independently analyzes data and advises Chairs on the best alternatives and strategies on a variety of topics. •Directs faculty to appropriate resources. Supervises work-study students, and GSI hires for GWS.•Requires in-depth knowledge of and ability to apply/interpret campus and college policies and procedures, which govern academic HR. •Excellent critical and innovative thinking to address complex issues and present nuanced analyses. •Thorough knowledge of system wide and campus policies, union contracts, procedures and practices that govern academic HR administration. •Thorough knowledge of campus and college goals, priorities and values and the legal and human implications of decisions. •Ability to analyze complex management issues; develop project scope and solutions, give professional advice to senior officials and make critical decisions regarding personnel.
