The Research and Pedagogy coordinator will assist in diverse waysthe development and use of public opinion surveys in the Americas. Theposition may involve multi-tasking and requires a willingness to re-prioritizeas needed in order to meet shifting deadlines and needs within LAPOP. With this in mind, the duties of this position will include, but not be limitedto survey design, survey analysis and reporting, editing, pedagogy,communication, and interaction with LAPOP students, staff and faculty.
The Latin American Public Opinion Project (LAPOP) researchinstitute is housed within the Political Science Department. LAPOP is a centerfor excellence in survey research. As an academic center, it also servespedagogical purposes via programs such as the LAPOP Undergraduate FellowProgram, campus outreach, and more. LAPOP is best known for its regularsurvey of the Western Hemisphere, the Americas Barometer. LAPOP is aprofessional research institute with a staff of full-time researchers and analysts.The Department of Political Science is a highly active, dynamic research- andteaching-oriented department at Vanderbilt University.

The person in this position will play a role in the design of LAPOP surveys. This includes tasks related to the programming of questionnaires into electronic instruments for data collection. It also includes giving input into question design. The Research Assistant may work individually or as part of a team in these processes.
Survey analysis and reporting
The person in this position will be responsible for assisting in the analysis of data from selected survey studies, as well as writing a variety of reports that in many cases must meet the terms of the contract/grant for the project. These reports should conform to LAPOPstandardsforthe presentation of data analysis, including the use of our established STATA programming to produce standardized charts that include complex sample design-based confidence intervals. These reports may also include presentations developed in PowerPoint.
The person in this position will be responsible for producing and, as well, editing LAPOP reports in English and in Spanish. The employee will be asked to contributeto LAPOP'sInsights seriesas an editor and/or as an author. For these tasks, the employee needs research experience, meticulous proof-reading skills, and knowledge of statistics as applied in the social sciences in general and survey data analysis in particular.
The person in this position will coordinate the involvement and instruction of undergraduate students in LAPOP's research processes. The person will also hold open office hours on a regular basis (no more than 3 hours per week on average) to assist those on Vanderbilt's campus who are using LAPOP or related survey data in their instruction or their research. The person in this position will coordinate and lend assistance to workshops conducted by LAPOP as instructional outreach to those on Vanderbilt's campus and beyond. The subject of these workshops will be the design and analysis of complex survey data, especially that produced by LAPOP.
The employee may need to interact with any sponsoring agencies, external partners, and LAPOP personnel to carry out tasks smoothly and efficiently. All communication to external individuals/agencies must be formal and professional. All internal communications should be professional.It is important to the well-functioning of LAPOP that the person in this position communicate regularlyand often with other LAPOP staff members and with the Director and Associate Director.
Interaction with LAPOP students, staff and faculty
It is expected that the employee will have regular, ongoing contact and professional exchanges with the LAPOP students, staff and faculty. This includes, but is not limited to, regular meetings of the LAPOP group at Vanderbilt and meetings of the staff. The employee may, on occasion, have responsibility for supervising student research assistance, as needed to complete particular projects. The employee therefore must be able and willing to lead meetings with students and instruct students on issues of research design and statistical analysis.
Profileof an Ideal Candidate
Master's degree is necessary, PhD in a related field is preferred.
Experience in comparative survey projects (not online surveys, but actual public opinion polls), advanced statistical skills, knowledge of STATA, Spanish language skills, research skills, and teaching experience required.
