Applies skills as a seasoned, experienced academic adviser. Provides advice to students on the full range of requirements for a department, college, or school with a wide variety of course requirements. Recommends solutions to progression and requirement issues. Advice may include not-clearly-defined programs such as independent study programs, interdisciplinary programs, or multiple programs. Works independently under general supervision.
The Department Latin American & Latino Studies consists of 10 faculty whose research spans multiple-disciplines, including though not limited to anthropology, cultural and ethnic studies, economics, history, politics, and sociology. Our newly launched graduate program currently supports 21 students pursuing an LALS PhD; and approximately 200 students are enrolled in our undergraduate program, completing either an LALS BA, LALS/Politics or LALS/Sociology combined BA, or a minor in LALS.
The Undergraduate Program Coordinator (UPC) works independently to provide executive administrative and analytical support to the department chair, undergraduate program committee, and department manager (DM). A skilled and knowledgeable professional, the UPC serves as primary advisor and resource to all faculty, undergraduate students, prospective students, and the campus community.
As a primary function, the UPC provides comprehensive administrative, financial, and operational support for the LALS undergraduate program and provides a broad range of student services in support of students' progress to degree and academic enrichment. As a unique feature of supporting the LALS undergraduate program, the UPC must address the specific needs of our undergraduate student population, a majority of whom are first-generation (83%) and EOP status (84%) and a subset of whom have undocumented status.
The Undergraduate Program Coordinator actively participates in the collaborative process of creating and implementing short-and long-range plans, and is responsible for identifying program and student needs, and recommending creative solutions using policies and procedures to meet and fulfill those needs. These duties require thorough knowledge of and adherence to all university policies, procedures, and protocols; and require the UPC to regularly exercise considerable judgment and tact in problem solving and decision-making.
Bachelor's degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.
Experience academically advising university level students with diverse backgrounds.
Related administrative/analytical/ management and leadership skills sufficient to oversee all operations of a complex academic program.
Political acumen sufficient to establish and maintain effective working relationships with diverse constituents.
Demonstrated individual initiative and ability to function effectively with minimal supervision and direction.
