The Department of History prepares students for service by studying the past as it relates to the present and to the future. Our approach affirms worthy heritages, welcomes long-neglected voices, applies innovative tools, interacts with other fields of study, and cultivates the virtue of hope in a world both deeply divided and globally interwoven.
Faculty in the History Department contribute to teaching in a number of cross-disciplinary programs, and we would value a candidate who could teach in any of these programs: Social Justice/Cultural Studies; the Honors Program; Asian Studies; majors in the School of Government, Business, and Economics; and/or the Spanish Studies and Spanish Heritage program.
The History Department of Seattle Pacific University invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor in the History of the United States. Applicants should hold a Ph.D. in History by August 2021. Candidates should provide evidence of strong teaching skills and of a deep commitment to diversity.
We seek a candidate who can teach about underrepresented histories of the U.S. from any time period and/or who can place U.S. history within a larger regional context. This could include Atlantic World, Caribbean, and/or Latin America. Possible research or teaching specialties that would be welcomed: racial and ethnic minorities (including Asian-American, Latinx, African-American, and/or indigenous history), immigration/diaspora, women/gender/sexuality, social class/labor history, urban history, diverse Christian perspectives and traditions, and/or environmental history.
Teaching responsibilities will include two U.S. history surveys (early and modern), along with electives that correspond with the candidate's areas of specialty. They will also teach a general education course on World History from 1500-present. Ideally, the candidate could also contribute to our Museum Studies track. It is hoped that the candidate will eventually be able to teach a class on the History of the Pacific Northwest, which is a required class for aspiring teachers in Washington State. A typical full-time teaching load is 2-2-3 on the quarter system.
To ensure full consideration, please submit a cover letter, curriculum vitae, teaching statement (max 2 pages), statement of faith (max 2 pages, see “Faculty Insert” for instructions) and three references.
