This temporary position will be responsible for the arrangement and description of the Delia Zapata Olivella Papers (MSS.0927). This important collection documents the life of Delia Zapata Olivella, leader of a Colombian dance troupe, choreographer, folklorist, and sister of Afro-Colombian author Manuel Zapata Olivella. She was instrumental in preserving African and Afro-Hispanic traditions especially relating to music, dance, oral history and popular culture. The person in this position will be responsible for organizing this wide-ranging collection and creating a globally accessible finding aid via ArchivesSpace. This position would also complete initial selection of items for digitization that are representative of her career.
Fluency in Spanish is required.
The Special Collections and University Archives Library is part of the Jean and Alexander Heard Libraries System. The mission of the Special Collections Library is to collect, preserve, and provide access to Vanderbilt University's special collections of rare books, manuscripts, photographs, memorabilia, and institutional archives. Special Collections provides primary resource material to a variety of local, national, and international scholars.
Duties and Responsibilities
Organize and describe the Delia Zapata Olivella Papers according to professional archival standards;
Work with a variety of archival formats, including paper, photographs, multimedia, and born-digital;
Create a finding aid using ArchivesSpace and the DACS descriptive standard;
Recommend items for digitization based on historical significance, expected research use, and preservation needs;
Collaborate with the Subject Librarian for Latin American, Iberian and Latino Studies and the Center for Latin American Studies to promote and publicize the collection.
This position will report to the Curator of Special Collections and will collaborate closely with the Subject Librarian for Latin American, Iberian, and Latino Studies and Senior Lecturer in Latin American Studies.
