Dept Marketing Statement The Division of Social Sciences research ranges from global issues to issues of culture and power, including social and economic relations between the U.S. and other nations, the social impacts of technological and environmental change, sustainability of human and ecological systems, and human development and social justice. The division offers eight doctoral programs, two master's and 12 bachelor degrees. Nationally-respected doctoral programs include Anthropology, Economics, Education, Environmental Studies, Politics, Psychology and Sociology. An innovative doctoral program was launched in 2014 in Latin American and Latino Studies. At the Masters level, the division offers degrees in Education and Applied Economics and Finance.
Social science research at UC Santa Cruz is organized within individual departments, as well as research centers, and research clusters that cross disciplinary boundaries.
Research in the Social Sciences Division generates approximately $7M in extramural awards. The Research Administration unit works closely with almost 200 faculty and affiliated principal investigators, Office of Sponsored Projects, and Extramural Funds Accounting to provide post-award support for grants, contracts, gifts, and other faculty research funding. Staff in the unit manage approximately $60M in expenditures.
Reporting to the Assistant Dean of Finance and Planning, the Research Administration Manager is responsible for high level financial and administrative management of complex federal and private contracts and grants supporting various research and instructional programs within the Social Sciences Division. The Manager plays a key role in the administration of unique and complex research initiatives by balancing and resolving contrasting perspectives and requirements of researchers, agencies, and the University of California to ensure that research can be conducted successfully and in compliance with UC and agency regulations.
The Research Administration Manager coordinates the day-to-day management of the Research Administration unit, supervising a team of research budget analysts and providing expertise in the implementation of new systems and business practices. The Manager provides unit leadership, supervising training research budget analysts in their various duties, including review of proposal budgets and award notices, routine reporting, sponsor billing, post-award budget revisions, no-cost time extensions, cost transfers, subcontract processing, cost share monitoring, and award and contract close-out. The Manager maintains effective relationships with the Office of Sponsored Projects, Extramural Funds Accounting, and other relevant campus units, and is a local expert providing sound analyses and recommendations to Social Sciences Divisional leadership and key staff.
The Research Administration Manager also independently manages a portfolio of contracts and grants, requiring regular review, reconciliation, projection of award finances, and preparation of adjustments, corrections, and financial reports. The Manager interacts regularly with, and provides high-quality customer service to, faculty and affiliated principal investigators conducting sponsored research, ensuring adherence to quality standards, and all policies and award regulations.
Pay, Benefits, & Work Schedule Salary Information: Salary Range $82,000 - $92,000. Salary commensurate with skills, qualifications and experience.

Job Duties 50% Provides post-award financial administration and management for research funds in accordance with organization policy and agency requirements. Provides guidance and counsel on complex research administration matters, including compliance regulations, to principal investigators and department administrators.
10% Provide policy analysis, advice and consultation to divisional leadership, other departments, and campus units on a wide range of issues concerning administering and accounting for sponsored projects, centers, institutes, and other research focused university activities. Provides lead divisional role in support of audits.
10% Develops and monitors policies and procedures for department or department operations.
10% Determines work priority, assigns portfolios and duties, re-delegates and implements changes in workload, duties and responsibilities necessary for the unit to function efficiently.
10% Provides training and professional development, either formally or on-the-job, for staff to ensure subject matter knowledge in appropriate areas (e.g., sponsored project administration, post-award administration, etc.). May deliver specialized training and / or develop content for education workshops in the area of research administration.
10% Daily management of staff; provides performance management for unit staff, including establishing annual objectives for skill-building and professional development for unit staff. Recommends hiring of new employees, salary actions, terminations, and performance ratings.
Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
Working knowledge of contracts and grants transactions and applicable financial systems, as well as related policy, accounting and regulatory compliance requirements.
Demonstrated advanced competence in the use of spreadsheet and database software in financial analysis, fiscal management and financial reports. Proficiency in use of common web applications.
Demonstrated advanced knowledge of generally accepted accounting, fiscal and reporting principles.
Thorough knowledge of and ability to interpret and apply common sponsor and institutional policies.
