The Department of History at the University of Pittsburgh seeks applicants for a tenure stream assistant professor in U.S. Latinx history, for appointment beginning in August 2023. This search is part of a multi-year university-wide cluster hiring initiative in Latinx Studies. The successful candidate will be expected to participate in that initiative, which will create a critical mass of scholars with expertise in Latinx studies at the university. Synergies link the initiative to Pitt’s Center for Latin American Studies and Center for Ethnic Studies Research and to new certificate programs in Afro-Latin American and Afro-Latinx Studies. More detailed information about the Provost’s Latinx cluster hiring initiative can be found here: https://www.provost.pitt.edu/latinx-cluster-hire-initiative .
Required qualifications:
- PhD in history (or closely related field); ABD candidates must be scheduled to defend their dissertations by August 1, 2023
- Research focus on Latino/a/x history
- Demonstrated research skills and a promising research and publication agenda
- Evidence of commitment to excellence in teaching and graduate mentorship in support of a diverse student body
The appointee will join a department committed to inspirational teaching and a research university with great strengths in international, transnational, and interdisciplinary area studies. Recognizing the crucial benefits that diversity contributes to our intellectual vitality, the University of Pittsburgh has embarked on significant initiatives to diversify its faculty, student body, and curriculum. We encourage applications from creative and dedicated scholars, teachers, and mentors eager to contribute to this mission. The successful applicant will teach two courses per semester. Salary and benefits are competitive.
Applicants should submit a cover letter containing a description of their research and teaching profile; a full CV; a chapter of their dissertation or first book (or a derived article); a 1-2-page statement that discusses how their past, planned, or potential contributions or experiences relating to diversity, equity, and inclusion will advance the University of Pittsburgh’s commitment to inclusive excellence; and contact information (including email addresses) for three recommenders by September 15, 2022.
Applicants who advance to the next stage will be asked to submit additional material, including the dissertation or book manuscript and a draft syllabus for a Latino History survey course. Recommenders will be notified at that point to submit letters of recommendation via our online application system.
