NYU's Los Angeles Program is seeking a local, part-time lecturer to develop, design, and teach an undergraduate course focused on the historical and critical understanding of the tradition of Latinx theater and its connections to the city of Los Angeles.
The instructor will be expected to develop the syllabus for this course with the guidance and collaboration of faculty from the Drama Department at the The Tisch School of the Arts and the NYU Los Angeles Program Director.
The course will take place in the academic center in the Fairfax/La Brea area of Los Angeles. Teaching commences in the Spring 2023 semester (January 24 through May 15).
The instructor role includes all preparation, delivery, and grading. Some administrative assistance is available to support the preparation of course materials. Courses are to be intellectually challenging in content and rigorous student assessment is required.
Course Description:
This class will look at the west coast tradition of Latinx theater and its particular connections with the broader Los Angeles performance community. Focusing primarily but not exclusively on questions of regional development, history, aesthetic specificity, and political impact, Latinx Theater and Performance may look at the development of this particular cultural form as a distinct genre with roots to oral ritual, performance art, studio art and other interdisciplinary influences. The class may trace roots back to the Latin American performance traditions such as Mexican vaudeville, the rise of the political theater in the 1960s, and the complexity of the genre in more contemporary times. Students will read play texts as well as scholarly articles to frame a more in-depth critical analysis of the Latinx performance.
Expectation of Hours:
The class meeting pattern will be discussed with qualified applicants during the interview process. In addition to the time required for course preparation, classroom instruction, and marking, the instructor is required to hold a minimum of one set 60-minute "office hour" per week on location, during which time she or he will be available to meet with students.
