The Program in Classical and Medieval Studies, in conjunction with the History Department, seeks a tenure-track colleague in ancient Roman culture and history, covering any span from the early republic to the late principate (700 BCE – 300 CE). This position begins August, 2023. We envision a scholar whose research and teaching focus on Roman colonial and imperial dynamics in Italy, Europe, North Africa, or West Asia. We seek someone who studies issues of race, status, and gender, possibly with attention to non-elite and enslaved persons. This scholar may also consider Rome’s legacy in European and American colonization and imperial efforts or the invocation of ancient Rome by contemporary white supremacists.
