The Department of History at Washington State University invites applications for a full-time, 9-month academic two-year term appointment as a postdoctoral teaching fellow position to teach the university's core undergraduate course, 'The Roots of Contemporary Issues' beginning August 16, 2023, pending budgetary approval.
'The Roots of Contemporary Issues' is a history course that helps students make sense of our complex world by focusing on the deep historical roots of present-day issues in global perspective. Washington State University aims to provide students with the tools to address contemporary issues in a mature, reasoned way, using evidence, critical thinking, and clear written and oral communication skills. The course provides inquiry-based, active-learning experiences so that students learn not only content and skills, but also play a role in defining their own intellectual journey, by developing a 15-week research project on a topic of interest to them.
The History Department understands that postdoctoral teaching fellows are also active scholars. The postdoctoral fellow will be invited to participate in scholarly discussions and events within the department, including presenting their own work. WSU acknowledges that its locations statewide are on the homelands of Native American peoples, who have lived in this region and have been caretakers of the land from time immemorial. The Morrill Act of 1862 established our land-grant institution by providing public and federal lands that are traced back to the disposition of Indigenous lands, often taken by coercive and violent acts, and the disregard of treaties. For that, we extend our deepest apologies. We owe our deepest gratitude to the Native peoples of this region and maintain our commitment towards reconciliation. And as a land-grant institution, WSU is deeply committed to the land-grant mission, its Memorandums of Understanding with Native tribes in the region, and a tradition of service to society.
