The Institute for Research and Education to Advance Community Health (IREACH) at Washington State University is seeking applications for a Research Scientist. IREACH is comprised of more than 70 faculty and staff engaged in community-facing multidisciplinary public health research, training, and education. At IREACH we are deeply committed to equitable research partnerships and promoting racial justice in both academia and public health, and collaborate with faculty across the University including the College of Medicine, as well as research partnerships with universities across the country and internationally. Our priority population foci are American Indian, Alaska Native, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander, Hispanic/Latin X, and rural peoples.
This position will be located within the IREACH Methods Core, a collegial group of epidemiologists, biostatisticians, and related methods experts. Faculty members within the Methods Core pursue independent research funding as well as provide methodologic support to others on a variety of topics, including quantitative analysis for both associative as well as predictive inference; qualitative and mixed methods analysis; and clinical trial or intervention research. Community-engaged research requires careful methods support, to balance scientifically rigorous study design while also meeting the logistical realities of community partners. Such skills are urgently needed but are not typically emphasized in doctoral or fellowship programs.
This position seeks applicants who will focus on scientific problems that improve methodologies used in neuroepidemiology research of underserved or understudied populations. A background in research methods, including epidemiology and/or biostatistics, and a background in independent analytic and coding skills are needed to be successful in this role. Added areas of desired expertise include: neurology, neuroepidemiology, imaging/biometrics, and neuropsychology; a background working in the context of health disparities research is not required but is an added plus.
This fellow or junior faculty member will be supervised by an epidemiologist faculty member within WSU Elson S Floyd College of Medicine and IREACH, and can be primarily located in Seattle or Spokane, Washington. The primary job functions will include support of ongoing research programs in neuroepidemiology of underserved populations on topics related to resilience, stress, and cognition; brain imaging; biomarkers; public health genetics and population risk; traumatic brain injury; social determinants of health; machine learning for diagnostics. Additional job functions will include support of grant writing programs as needed; support of other IREACH Methods Core programs. IREACH provides extensive support for development, including design, career development plan, and writing funding applications, and career development and diversity supplement awards are particularly encouraged for early-stage applications. This position may require occasional travel to research locations around the United States.
This is a temporarily funded, one (1) year position, with annual renewals subject to satisfactory performance, mutual consent, and available funding.

Required Qualifications:
An earned PhD in Epidemiology, Biostatistics, or related field, at the time of hire.
Two (2) or more years of directly related experience and background. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
Training and experience in quantitative research methods.
Ability to communicate clearly about epidemiological and biostatistical concepts, methods, and findings to non-specialists including lay audiences.
Ability and desire to undertake new and/or uncomfortable challenges with a high level of independence.

Annual Salary Range: $80,000 to $90,000; commensurate with qualifications and experience
In accordance with RCW 49.58.110, the above salary reflects the full salary range for this position. Individual placement within the range is based on the candidate's current experience, education, skills, and abilities related to the position or as mandated by a U.S. Department of Labor prevailing wage determination.
