Now, our Alumni Engagement team is looking for a Director who will provides strategy and leadership to develop, implement, and maintain a comprehensive program designed to provide consistent, meaningful opportunities for volunteerism, service, and events and programs for international alumni to enhance loyalty, dedication, and support for Boston University.
Alumni Engagement at Boston University
The Alumni Engagement team is dedicated to understanding alumni, strengthening pride and awareness, and facilitating ways to grow and sustain the base of alumni engaging with and supporting Boston University. The team has oversight of alumni digital strategy, alumni experience operations, and measuring engagement-through both attitudinal and behavioral dimensions-of more than 350,000 alumni across the globe. This team works in close collaboration with colleagues in the Office of Development & Alumni Relations, and across departments and schools at Boston University.
Director, International Engagement
International alumni represent around 10% of all BU alumni and live in 189 countries across the globe. The Director is responsible for building and strengthening the international alumni network by planning and implementing engagement opportunities that foster lifelong mutually enriching connections and support University priorities and initiatives. The successful candidate must have the ability to drive and coordinate the core strategy across our global alumni network and the University and ensure a consistent message. The Director will cultivate a culture of inclusivity and philanthropy to include events and programs, volunteer opportunities, and campus and community partnerships.
Responsibilities:
Program Development:
Engage alumni, increase their connection to each other and to the University, and build their support for the University by developing, organizing, managing, and directing regional and international alumni programming, events, activities, communications, and special projects to further the goals of Boston University.
Primary oversight for 25 international markets with currently active volunteer groups, identifying potential new markets, and developing and maintaining overall strategy for alumni engagement.
Responsible for the strategic planning and implementation of at least three international events per year, including the Asian Business Forum, the Latin American Summit, and the Kleh Family Foundation Distinguished Lecture.
Create and manage strategic communication with international alumni using multiple channels including print, web, email and social media.
In partnership with database administrators and staff, ensure all volunteers and members are coded in the database so that a robust pipeline of volunteers is established.
The Director works closely with Annual Giving to increase individual giving and pipeline development through the identification, engagement, cultivation, and solicitation of annual gifts and the development and support of targeted international giving programs.
Volunteer Engagement:
Initiate and maintain relationships with international alumni leaders, donors/prospects, and volunteers. Actively recruit alumni volunteers for leadership positions within international alumni networks. Manage regional alumni networks and affinity volunteers and steward relationships with them to maintain and build self-sustaining alumni networks. Lead alumni and student volunteer committees/groups; manage time, activity, and expectations to achieve goals in support of institutional priorities.
In collaboration with the Executive Director, assess organizational need and capacity for volunteers; identify meaningful volunteer opportunities to engage volunteers for the benefit of the University and the global alumni network. Identify and develop volunteers and leaders who represent the full spectrum of the overall alumni body. Set goals for volunteer development; ensure that these goals and objectives are well articulated across campus.
Create a communication strategy for volunteers that includes regular insider updates and impact reports to volunteers and staff. Ensure all volunteers are stewarded and thanked appropriately for their level of service in a way that is consistent across the Advancement program. Conduct end-of-year program evaluations, including volunteer surveys, to ensure structure aligns with strategic priorities of the department.
Staff Supervision:
Manages assistant director of international alumni engagement. Provide advice, support and guidance of the day-to-day operations. Hire and train staff as appropriate by being versed in all aspects of the Alumni Engagement programs and the work of volunteer management, event strategy and planning, communications, and budgeting.
Provide the framework for, and oversight to, strategic planning and benchmarking, recognition of international volunteers and donors, events, volunteer recruitment, training, and support. Participate in event-related meetings, including debriefings.
Work closely with the international development officers to increase alumni participation, engagement, and communication by coordinating programming and outreach and providing front-line information for these colleagues.

Bachelors degree with 10+ years of experience including 5+ years of management experience, or a Masters degree with 8+ years of relevant experience including five years of management experience
The ideal candidate will be an experienced advancement professional, preferably in higher education.
The candidate should be energetic, enthusiastic, and dedicated with proven experience managing volunteers, strong leadership skills, and the ability to work with others to create effective engagement programs across many platforms.
Demonstrated analytical, organizational and decision-making skills with follow-up abilities are essential.
Strong well-developed communication and planning skills, and a strategic, goal-oriented approach to work.
Demonstrate the proven ability to develop good working relationships up, down and across an organization, and easily communicate with a broad range of audiences.
Willingness to work evenings and weekends, and to travel.
Proven ability to work independently as well as collaboratively on a team.
Demonstrated ability to effectively motivate, train and support colleagues and volunteers.
Knowledge of modern data management practices and techniques including data-based computerized information systems, data modeling, and models of analysis that lead to effective decision making on behalf of the program.
