The Department of History at the University of Utah invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professor in Latin American history, excluding Brazil, with an emphasis on the long nineteenth-century. This includes the Spanish-speaking Caribbean. Specialization is open to all thematic areas. The successful candidate will demonstrate a strong commitment to research and to research-informed teaching at all levels of the undergraduate and graduate curriculum. The teaching load is two courses per semester. Teaching responsibilities include undergraduate and graduate courses in the history of Latin America, including a two-course Latin American history survey, and, upon occasion, an undergraduate course on historical methods. An ability to teach one half of the World History survey is preferred, but not required. History faculty have opportunities to participate in the University's Interdisciplinary programs in Latin American Studies, International Studies, and the School for Social and Cultural Transformation, which includes Ethnic Studies, Gender Studies, and Disability Studies. The Center for Latin American Studies, a Title VI National Resource Center (NRC), is a part of a two-university partnership that grants the nation’s largest number of Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) awards for Latin American languages. The University of Utah is a national leader in Classical and Modern Náhuatl language and cultural studies, with a summer language institute and academic year course offerings.
