The Department of Modern Languages, Linguistics, and Intercultural Communication (MLLI, https://mlli.umbc.edu) at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Spanish, beginning August 2024. We seek candidates holding a Ph.D. in Spanish or related fields by the start date with teaching and research experience in heritage language study and instruction. Preference will be given to candidates with a PhD at the time of application. We are eager to read about the candidate's focused research agenda and high quality undergraduate and any graduate teaching experience in both Spanish and English. Our new colleague would join us in advancing the MLLI department's fruitful research in intercultural communication from the perspectives of cultural studies, language acquisition and pedagogy, and linguistics. The annual teaching load is five courses. These courses might include our current two-course series of Spanish for Heritage Speakers, Advanced Spanish Conversation and Composition, and the major capstone (Studies in Spanish Language). Their teaching portfolio may also include a cross-listed graduate course on Methods of Teaching Modern Foreign Language in K-12 schools, original community engaged learning experiences, and the creation of a new 200-level heritage Spanish course. Experience coordinating a language program is a plus. A demonstrated commitment consistent with UMBC's initiatives on equity, diversity, and inclusive excellence is essential. UMBC is a public Carnegie Research 1, minority-serving institution located in Catonsville, Maryland within the Baltimore-Washington corridor, home of a diverse Latin American diaspora. The university has a student population of 14,000 graduate and undergraduate students. US News and World Report regularly ranks UMBC in the top 10 of most innovative universities, and the Chronicle of Higher Education recognizes UMBC among its "Great Colleges to Work For" with regards to cooperative governance, compensation, teaching environment, and work-life balance. At UMBC we are especially proud of our diverse student population, one that is exceptionally served by the intercultural makeup of the MLLI faculty body. We invite candidates to join MLLI at UMBC in redefining excellence in higher education through an inclusive culture that connects innovative teaching and learning, research across disciplines, and civic engagement. Applicants should submit their materials by November 5, 2023 for priority consideration. We encourage candidates to describe the ways in which their research, teaching, and life experience contribute to their ability to meet the academic aspirations and needs of all UMBC students with a specific focus on those self-identified as Latinx and Hispanic (16%).
