Job Summary:

The Department of English in the School of Liberal Arts at Marist College invites applications for a tenure track Assistant Professor and Writing Center Director to begin in July 2024. In addition to Writing Center administrative responsibilities, the successful candidate will also teach a variety of writing courses including First-Year Writing; foundational courses for the English Major; and upper-level courses in the candidate’s area of specialization. This position comes with a course reassignment for Writing Center duties, so candidates can expect a 2-2 teaching load. Candidates with an expertise in undergraduate research, service-learning pedagogies, or other high-impact practices are especially welcome. Candidates must demonstrate strong or potential accomplishments in areas contributing to diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Minimum Qualifications:

Ph.D. in Rhetoric and Composition or related field is required. Writing Center tutoring and administrative experience, and teaching experience and effectiveness at the college level are also required.

Essential Functions:

Administration of the Marist Writing Center, some WAC responsibilities (the applicant would not be expected to direct a large-scale WAC Program), and a 2-2 teaching load with the expectation of teaching one section of our tutor-training course “Collaborative Writing” each fall. In addition to teaching and research responsibilities, English faculty participate regularly in service activities. There will be some oversight of the Writing Center during the summer session and the Writing Center director will receive and additional stipend for this work.

Writing Center Director duties will include:

• Hiring, training, and supervising Writing Center Staff—both professional and peer tutors—and daily oversight of the Writing Center (alongside the Asst. Director of the Writing Center)
• Assessing Writing Center services and programs
• Developing Writing Center workshops in conjunction with Writing Center staff
• Publicizing the Writing Center across campus
• Working with the English Department and a broad array of campus constituencies to foster ongoing conversations about writing on campus
• Writing semester-end reports
• Deployment of small-scale WAC initiatives, including our fledgling Embedded Tutors Program

The School of Liberal Arts includes 50 full-time faculty and over 75 part-time faculty. The School of Liberal Arts includes departments in English, history, modern languages, philosophy & religious studies, and political science, and many interdisciplinary programs such as American Studies, African Diaspora Studies, and Latin American & Caribbean Studies. In addition, the ABA approved Paralegal Studies Program and the Pre-Law Program are part of the School of Liberal Arts. The School of Liberal Arts also houses the Center for Civic Engagement and Leadership, the Hudson River Valley Institute, the Weiss Language Center, the Writing Center, and the Marist Theatre Program.
