Brief Summary of Work for this Position: The Department of Music at the University of North Carolina Wilmington invites applications for a nine-month full-time position as Visiting Assistant Professor - Director of Bands. This is a one-year, fixed-term non-renewable appointment beginning August 2025 through May 2026.
The Department seeks an inspiring and collaborative music educator to direct the UNCW Symphonic Band and teach conducting, along with other courses aligned with the candidate's expertise and departmental needs. The successful candidate will demonstrate excellence in teaching, engagement in creative/scholarly activities, and an ability to work effectively with faculty colleagues across all degree areas. In addition, the successful candidate will demonstrate a strong commitment to student mentorship and artistic excellence, motivating students to reach their full creative potential.
This is an opportunity to join a faculty of teaching artists and scholars who are dedicated to student-centered learning and to growth in new and current programs.
Primary responsibilities will include:
Direct the UNCW Symphonic Band and Pep Band
Teach undergraduate courses in conducting and instrumental techniques
Contribute to the curriculum based on individual qualifications and departmental goals
Engage in student mentoring and serve on departmental committees
Lead recruitment initiatives for wind and percussion areas

Developing and directing a chamber winds ensemble
Leading the OLLI New Horizons Band
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:
Master of Music degree (MM)
Demonstrated success working with diverse populations as a wind band conductor and educator
Proven effectiveness as a program builder and student recruiter
Previous teaching experience and leadership of a wind band program as a Teaching Assistant, at the community college and/or high school level
Ability to teach and mentor undergraduate students
Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills & Experience: Preference will be given to candidates with:
Doctoral degree - DMA in wind band conducting or PhD in music education
Teaching experience and leadership of a wind band program at the university level
Leadership of an athletic band
Leadership of a community wind band
Experience in teaching conducting
Experience in teaching instrumental techniques, beginning band pedagogy and/or instrumental methods courses
Ability to contribute as an applied teacher in an area that complements the department

Primary Function of Organizational Unit: The Department of Music is committed to fostering an inclusive teaching and learning environment through its curricula, as well as the artistic endeavors of students and faculty. In addition, the Department of Music is dedicated to nurturing excellence in performance, teaching and scholarship by guiding and preparing students through a comprehensive curriculum that provides a strong foundation for an array of opportunities in the music profession, as well as for graduate study in a range of music specialties. The Department of Music offers two undergraduate curricula, the Bachelor of Arts in Music with options in Performance, Jazz Studies, Music Technology and General Studies, and the Bachelor of Music in Music Education.
College/School Information: The College of Humanities, Social Sciences, and the Arts (CHSSA) is home to 14 academic departments and offers a wide variety of undergraduate and graduate degree programs including the Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Fine Arts, Bachelor of Music, Master of Arts, Master of Fine Arts, and Master of Public Administration as well as combined bachelor's/master's degree programs in Spanish and English. The CHSSA also houses the Gender Studies and Research Center, an interdisciplinary and intersectional community of students, scholars, and advocates committed to social justice and equity.
In addition, the CHSSA offers a full complement of minors including interdisciplinary minors such as Africana studies, American studies, Asian studies, classical studies, European studies, forensic science, journalism, Latin American studies, medical humanities, Middle East and Islamic studies, Native American studies, and women and gender studies. Undergraduate certificates for professional writing and publishing, as well as a number of post-baccalaureate certificates such as conflict management and resolution, emergency and disaster management, forensic science, science and medical writing, women's, gender, and sexuality studies, and Hispanic studies are a part of the college's offerings.
The CHSSA contributes significantly to the curriculum that comprises UNCW's University Studies Program, through which all undergraduates gain a foundation in the liberal arts and develop the transferable skills essential for life in the twenty-first century.
