Assistant or Associate Professor of Classical Studies and Roman History
Location: Houston, Texas
Internal Number: 130622
The Department of Modern and Classical Literatures and Cultures (MCLC) seeks an assistant professor or an associate professor in Classical Studies (Latin) and Roman History with a joint appointment in the Department of History. The successful candidate will specialize in Roman history and culture; we especially encourage applicants with additional specializations in ancient race and slavery and gender and sexuality. Dedication to undergraduate teaching is a must. The ability to teach undergraduate Latin and Greek at all levels is a requirement; opportunities may also arise to teach graduate students. Rice University has a semester-based teaching schedule with a 2-2 teaching load. The successful candidate will teach at least two classes per year listed or cross-listed with each of the two departments.
Above all, we are looking for a candidate who will collaborate imaginatively with us as we work on expanding and developing our curriculum in the Classical Studies program, and who will contribute with energy and enthusiasm to the projects and activities of the whole department. Opportunities for interdisciplinary research projects and innovative teaching within and beyond Rice's School of Humanities are plentiful and a high priority. Any candidate for this position is also expected to contribute directly to the rapidly growing interdisciplinary programs and areas in the School of Humanities, such as Environmental Studies; the Center for the Study of Women, Gender & Sexuality; the program in Politics, Law and Social Thought; or the history of global slavery and its legacy, which is an interdisciplinary strength in the School of Humanities.
Candidates must have a PhD in Classics/Ancient History or related field by July 1, 2024. Review of applications will start October 15, 2023, and will continue until the position is filled. Application materials must include a letter of application, CV, teaching statement, three letters of recommendation, diversity statement, and a writing sample of approximately twenty pages. Applications must be submitted online via Interfolio. Finalists will also be asked for teaching evaluations (if available).
The successful candidate would begin duties at Rice on July 1, 2024.
