The Department of Modern Languages and Literatures at Furman University invites applications for an Assistant, Associate, or Professor of Spanish, tenure-track appointment, effective August 2024. Located in Greenville, SC, Furman University is a nationally-ranked, top 50 liberal arts college which aspires to become a leader among its peer institutions in making meaningful and lasting progress in responding to the needs and concerns of people of color, women, and those who identify as LGBTQIA+. Ph.D. in Spanish required by August 1, 2024. Native or near-native fluency in Spanish and English and prior teaching experience required. Candidates must demonstrate scholarly potential as well as a commitment to and excellence in undergraduate instruction at all levels of Spanish language, culture, or literature. They must be passionate language teachers, dedicated mentors, enthusiastic study away directors, and energetic contributors to The Furman Advantage (https://www.furman.edu/furman-advantage/).
Specialty open, but we would be especially interested in candidates who have demonstrated research and pedagogical expertise in topics relating to one or more of the following: marginalized communities; race and ethnicity; gender and sexuality studies; ecocriticism in Latin America, or Transatlantic Studies. Cross-disciplinary intersections with our new Africana Studies major and existing minor programs in African-American and Diaspora Cultures, Film Studies, Latin American and Latinx Studies, Linguistics, Poverty Studies, and/or Women's, Gender and Sexuality Studies are a plus. The successful candidate will have the ability to work with historically underrepresented students, including students of color, first-generation students, and be committed to assisting the university in its continuing efforts to become a model of inclusive excellence.
Teaching load is five courses per year. Responsibilities include directing study abroad; involvement in co-curricular activities; teaching first-year writing seminars; offering interdisciplinary courses that contribute to other programs; pursuing an active research agenda; advising and mentoring in programs such as Pathways; and university service.
