The Assistant Director, Global Health Center at the Institute for Public Health and Department of Medicine will report directly to the Centerâ™s Director and Co-Director to provide strategic leadership, research and training program oversight, administrative and operational management of all aspects of the Center. The Assistant Director will work as a member of the Director and Co-Directorâ™s extensive multi-country global health research and training team, assisting with execution and implementation of research projects in Africa, Latin America, Asia, Australia, the United States and in new countries/regions as these projects expand.Job Description
Primary Duties & Responsibilities
Major responsibilities include, but are not limited to: a) developing and implementing the Centerâ™s strategic plan, budget, and programs; b) supervising research coordinators currently involved in research projects; c) coordinating research activities with principal investigators; d) coordinating research efforts with global health partners; e) developing, maintaining, and strengthening effective relationships with faculty, students, and staff across campuses and schools at the university to advance global health connections and collaborations; f) developing, organizing, and coordinating events for the Center; g) managing multidisciplinary projects, programs, and groups; h) being a liaison for international site projects the Center is involved with, including coordinating efforts with other Institute for Public Health, Department of Medicine, and WU-wide global health programs and initiatives.Â
Specific research projects under the leadership of the Center Director and Co-Director include: 1) Implementation Research Strategies for Heart, Lung, and Blood Co-morbidities in People Living with HIV Research Coordinating Center; 2) Research Training Programs in Cardiovascular diseases in Peru, Zambia, Nigeria and Rwanda; 3) implementation of science hypertension research programs in Nigeria and Peru; 4) Data Science in Africa related research and training activities; 5) Nigeria Sodium Study; 6) hypertension and heart failure polypill research in Africa, South Asia, and St. Louis; 7) cardio-obstetrics and maternal cardiovascular health promotion research in Nigeria and St. Louis, among others. All these research studies have an implementation science, training and capacity building, and cardiovascular disease/hypertension health focus for both locally and globally.Â
The Assistant Director additional responsibilities will include: a) leading development of study protocols; b) training and supervising project research coordinators and assistants; c) database development and maintenance (i.e., supervising research data entry, cleaning and analysis); d) working directly with field collaborators to implement existing projects and to initiate new studies; e) intra- and extra-mural proposal development and seeking funding opportunities; and f) independent travel, both nationally and internationally, to disseminate findings to researchers, practitioners and policymakers.
The Assistant Director will supervise Center staff, fellows, residents, and students and is expected to work independently, take initiative in problem solving and agenda setting, and assume leadership roles as determined by the Center Director and Co-Director. The Assistant Director will work with the Associate Director of the Institute for Public Health, with functional and administrative reporting, regular interaction, and close collaboration with the Institute for Public Health Director and the Global Health Center leadership.
This is an executive-level equivalent position that requires a high degree of independent judgment, individual initiative and discretion. The incumbent is expected to work independently but with ongoing supervision from the Global Health Center Director and Co-Director, and in collaboration with research partners and administrative offices at Washington University.
Strategic Leadership
- Under the Direction of the Center Director and Co-Director, develop and implement the Centerâ™s strategic plan, budget, and programs. Gather, analyze, and synthesize data from a wide variety of relevant internal and external sources, including the GHC Internal and External Advisory Board members.Â
- Under the direction of the Center Director and Co-Director, align Center budgets, assess long-term financial needs, and work with business staff to monitor expenses.
- Oversee the implementation of the Global Health Center strategic plan and corresponding objectives. Develop and track annual metrics of success for the Global Health Center. Develop strategies and tactics to achieve success of proposed metrics.Â
- Ensure integration of Center efforts into larger Institute for Public Health and university mission and key priority areas and identify opportunities for collaboration with other Institute initiatives.
- Assist strategically with planning and coordination of activities related to the GHC transition from IPH to the new School of Public Health (SPH) at Washington University. This role will continue to expand as the SPH activities increase in the next few years.
Research and Training Program Oversight
- Under the Direction of the Center Director and Co-Director, supervise research coordinators currently involved in research projects.Â
- Perform research-related leadership tasks including working with the Center Director/Co-Director, to draft protocols, manuscripts, project progress reports, and grant proposals. Coordinate research activities with principal investigators and global health partners and manage and monitor study progress across a broad portfolio of research across varied topics and in multiple international contexts.
- Monitor, identify, and contribute to proposals to respond to potential funding sources for research, projects, and special events from intramural and extramural sources, including the NIH.Â
- Contribute to fundraising activities of the Global Health Center, including working with the Center Director/Co-Director to prepare independent and collaborative proposals for grant funding.
- Develop, organize, and coordinate dissemination conferences and make presentations at local and international conferences related to research activities.Â
- Independently and under the direction of the Center Director and Co-Director, the Assistant Director will be required to travel internationally, including to one or more of the following countries: Peru, Uganda, Zambia, Nigeria, Rwanda, Mozambique, India, Sri Lanka, Australia and other countries for research and research training related work.
Administrative and Operational Management
- Under the Direction of the Center Director and Co-Director, oversee Global Health Center daily operations and activities, including being a liaison for international site projects the Center is involved with, including coordinating efforts with other Institute for Public Health, Department of Medicine, and university global health-oriented centers and initiatives. Ensure integration and identify opportunities for collaboration.
- Develop, maintain, and strengthen effective relationships with faculty, students, and staff across campuses and schools at the university to advance global health connections and collaborations.
- Manage multidisciplinary research and training projects, programs, and groups.Â
- Represent the Centerâ™s Director and Co-Director at meetings and events, as requested.
- Supervise and manage student workers (e.g., work-study, student Ras, post-docs, practicum students) and staff of the Center.
Coordination, Implementation, and Collaboration
- Under the Direction of the Center Director and Co-Director, organize and execute meetings of the GHC Internal and External Advisory Boards.
- Develop written materials for the GHC such as annual reports, briefing documents, abstracts, agendas, news articles, and other publications for Center leadership and other stakeholders.
- Develop and coordinate initiatives and projects with global health partners across the university including faculty, staff, and students.Â
- Conduct outreach with faculty scholars, staff, and students working in or interested in global health to foster connections, collaboration, and catalyze innovative ideas.Â
- Develop communication and informational content to support the GHC, in conjunction with public relations and communication staff within other units, including the Institute for Public Health and Department of Medicine.Â
- Provide guidance and supervision to the Global Health Student Advisory Committee.
- Under the Direction of the Center Director and Co-Director, organize, coordinate, and supervise the Global Health Center Summer Research Programs, including both Public/Global Health track and RADIANCE track.
- Supervise the training of coordinators, research assistants, undergraduate, graduate, and medical students and research fellows involved in global health research projects. Facilitate and coordinate the Early Stage Investigators (ESI) program across all schools at WU.
Job Location/Travel
Primary workspace will be at the Global Health Center office located at the Institute for Public Health, Taylor Avenue Building on the WU Medical Campus. Secondary workspace is available at the Institute for Public Health workspace located on the Danforth Campus, Seigle Suite of Hillman Hall. Domestic and foreign travel (up to 15%) is expected.
Preferred Qualifications
- PhD or equivalent degree with at least 2 year of relevant global health work experience.Â
- Experience in project management and coordination of international research projects in multiple settings.Â
- Experience communicating with funding organizations and with U.S. government agencies.Â
- At least 12 months of work experience with low- and middle-income countries.Â
- Excellent writing, editing, research, and presentation skills.Â
- Excellent computer skills, including Outlook, PowerPoint, and qualitative research software programs.Â
- Full fluency in English (written and spoken).Â
- Be familiar with rights management of copyrighted materials, and how to obtain rights and permissions as needed.
- Research experience, especially with an understanding of human subjects research and ethical issues.Â
- Willingness and ability to work in low- and middle-income countries clinical and public health settings.
- Willingness to travel internationally is essential, specifically to rural areas in low- and middle-income countries, including Sub-Saharan African and Latin American countries.
- Experience participating in the development of a research program, its implementation and evaluation.
- Knowledge of NIH funding and grant application procedures.
- Strong organizational skills; strong academic writing; and strong verbal communication skills.Â
- Detail-oriented, comfort with public speaking; and a working knowledge of proposal writing.
- Multilingual.Â
- Experience with research data analysis and grant writing.
- Prior work with international focused research and knowledge of field research is desirable.
- Knowledge of local cultures of multiple sub-Saharan African and Latin America countries.

Required Qualifications
Masters degree in Public Health or equivalent degree, with at least four years of experience in global health work program administration and/or research.Â

$64,700.00 - $110,500.00 / AnnuallyThe salary range reflects base salaries paid for positions in a given job grade across the University.
